717,500-gallon wastewater overflow reported in Temple

The city of Temple reported wastewater overflows into Bird Creek Wednesday that resulted from excessive rains.

The overflows were reported at 4320 Lions Park Road, where 645,500 gallons spilled. Another 72,000 gallons overflowed at 2402 S. 61st Street.

Bird Creek between Westwood Road and Bird Creek Drive was affected, as was Lions Park, the city said in a news release.

The overflows were reported to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. Crews will remove debris and disinfect the affected areas, officials said.

“The public should avoid contact with waste material, soil or water in the area potentially affected by the spill,” the city said.

Residents with private drinking wells with a half-mile of the spill sites are urged to boil water for at least two minutes to ensure destruction of bacteria. Residents should only use water that has been distilled or boiled and are urged to have their private wells tested and disinfected.

The overflows did not affect the city of Temple’s drinking water.   Click here for Temple Daily Telegram article.
